Mt Whitney is off to the right. No snow right now but it will certainly be cold, in the upper 40s up top

I have never hiked a 14,000+ foot peak. So hopefully on Saturday I will accomplish that feat with one of the easiest in California. Ive been on hikes to 12-13k or so and certainly felt the challenge of altitude. But no wildly throbbing headaches or anything detrimental, just more water and work required. I’m probably more concerned about smoke from not-so-distant fires. No threat of said fires getting closer but the smoke sure could be a problem. I intend to start my hike at about 0530 and hopefully summit before sunset just over 12 hours later. That should give me enough time even if every step is a fight. In an ideal world I am back to the car before sunset but I will take it slow if I have to. The hike is 23 miles with 4600 feet of elevation gain starting around 10,000 feet or so. The first 7-8 miles only gain 1000 feet so its pretty mild and includes lovely alpine lakes. Its that last 8 miles of straight up the mountain that will be the challenge. Technically easier than the hike I did last weekend locally in Malibu but the added 10-14,000 feet might make it slightly more difficult anyways. Also going to be the first long highway trip since putting on coilovers on the STi. Wish me luck!

You got this! Definitely one of the toughest things I’ve done. My brothers and I did Belford in CO a good while back.

It’s been 30 years since I’ve summitted a 14,000 peak. I was camping with a friend in the San Isabel National Forest near Leadville Colorado. We were camping at 9,000 feet, so we had a few days to acclimate to to the altitude. Only our youth help with b eing lowlanders from Missouri. We made it to the top of a peak pretty quickly on our first summit attempt, but then saw the thunderstorm moving in. That didn’t leave much time to enjoy the view before we tried to get down below the tree line. Much of the return trip was wet, but at least we were no longer standing out like lightning rods.

I don’t mind 5,000 foot climbs these days, but only if I start at lower elevation.

good luck! we did Whitney a numbers of years ago in a 2 day stint. remember to keep hydrated and don’t be afraid of those calories, you’re gonna burn them.

Sounds like a nice day. Will you camp near the top if it takes too long?

I’ve never done a hike to 14k feet and it’s been a long time since my family drove to the top of Pikes Peak, but I have done hikes to 10k feet and done plenty of skiing at that elevation and man do you get winded fast when you’re used to near sea level oxygen levels.

I did Mt. Yale in Colorado about six years ago as my first (and only) 14er . I very rarely hike, so my legs were definitely feeling the burn on the way down. Glad I did it though!

That sounds intense but also fun. Not doing it solo are you?

I’ve climbed Pikes Peak and Mt. Evans.*

*I drove to the top and walked around, by default I had to climb up at some point. That counts.

Good luck! That’ll be a worthy accomplishment. We just rode up Mt. Evans last week but that’s not difficult. It’s a paved road and it’s not steep. Lack of air was the main issue. I can’t imagine how much harder hiking to 14K will be. I’ve ridden at 12,000 ft and the breathing at 14,000 ft seemed multiples harder.

A headache starting around 13K ft worried me and I walked the bike a lot. But hiking allows you time to get acclimated to altitude.

They already took down the signs at the summit for the season. Temp was upper 40's there too. Your California smoke obscures the mountains in the background.

I’ve never climbed in CO. I used to climb in the Himalayas though, I’ve had basecamps above 16,000! Actually I drove over a pass into Tibet at about 16k I think.

Pikes peak definitely hurt just walking around up there. It was manageable but I certainly felt out of it. My girlfriend said she felt drunk up there. She was not happy lol

I'm not backpacking it, just going up with a day pack. So if I give up, it will just be trundle back to the car. At least there's plenty of water on the way so I won't have that problem.

I’m planning to bring 3L of water laced with Liquid IV. I’ll chug that water during the first 7 or 8 miles, refill another 3L and another packet of Liquid IV. Bringing a couple empty water bottles so I might lug an extra liter up the final climb since there isn’t water for that bit. For food I’m going to have a nice oatmeal breakfast and pack two sandwiches (one chicken, one peanut butter) along with a couple protein bars and some nuts.

Going for a meat free/I guess vegan dinner tonight to maximize the energy advantages of that.

Actually, apparently 14ers aren’t too difficult:

I enjoyed reading about how the youngest dude to hike all of the 14ers in California was 8. And something about solo, unsupported time record for another dude riding a bicycle between trail heads was like a week (there's at least 7 of them). Now I feel like a chump pushing 30 just trying to do 1 lol.

heh. It’s an accomplishment.  It’s more than 98% of people can do.
